一、以no-开头的否定词与but连用

以no-开头的四个否定词nothing，no one, nobody和nowhere 可以与but连用，表示 “only”的意思。 例如：

I look back on this period with nothing but pleasure.

【译文】我非常愉快地回忆这段时期。

She has been to nowhere but her father’s hometown.

【译文】她只是去过她父亲的老家。

It is nobody ( else) but Tom himself.

【译文】不是别人，正是汤姆自己。

二、以any-开头的否定词与but连用

以any-开头的四个不定代词和副词也可以与but连用，表示强烈的否定。

例如：

The service of the hotel is anything but satisfactory.

【译文】这家酒店的服务质量很让人不满意。

It's been years since he took her to visit anyone but the children.

【译文】他不让她见孩子们已经好几年了。

I could never speak about anything but business to Ivan.

【译文】除了生意我和伊万没什么好谈的。（注：此句是个双重否定句)

She'd like to stay anywhere but Japan.

【译文】她就不愿意待在日本。
